Application of Knowledge: Digital Literacy Skills Checklist

Knowledge is really about the accumulation of facts and ideas that we acquire through study, research, investigation, observation, or experience. It’s being aware of something, and having information. The application of that knowledge is different - it's taking that knowledge and using it, understanding it, and applying it to everyday life.  We might call application of knowledge, "skills".

Uh-oh - The Task & Digital Literacy

"Uh-oh".  Not so comforting words to hear when you are sitting in  a chair having your blood pressure taken. Even worse when the nurse says, "Let me just check with the doctor."

"Uh-oh"; blood pressure a bit high. Nothing new for me.  It sometimes is.  Check it again, and it is fine. Of course it is. That is just the way my body works.

Later today, I did an "uh-oh".  I had five students taking the final task for the Digital Literacy Level 1 class, and they all completed their task in the alotted four hours. Yay. Their work was saved on the college PC desk top (it's a controlled task so they are not allowed to save it perminantly).

Share the Light

I am not ranting and raving anymore; I just intend to share my experience.  I am hoping that my thoughts might help others because writing them down for me, is helping me.

I am trying to ease into a healthier lifestyle. It is very difficult. One of the most difficult things I have ever done.

I understand that if you take the time to write things down, you are putting thought onto paper, which gives it validity; and in turn, puts it out in the universe thus giving it action.  Thoughts and words are powerful things.

Teaching Digital Literacy doesn’t have to be that difficult!

I have been converted.

It’s been several weeks since I have written anything and to be perfectly honest, I have been very busy teaching.

NHS WALES, I am asking for help, please

This is personal. Really personal. I am in a medical conundrum. I am on various medications for various medical conditions and it has become a vicious cycle.

Here is what it looks like:

Witnessing an Act of Violence

On Monday the 2nd of January, my husband and I witnessed an act of violence that was both disturbing because of the act itself, and disgusting because of the lack of response by the people around us and the police we managed to flag down.

Fake News, Social Media & Censorship

There is a storm coming, it's a big one, and we better pay attention or we won't be prepared.

Censorship is "...the suppression of free speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions."

Digital Literacy, Rule 41 & Hacking

I recently taught a 6.5-hour lesson delivering the Level 2 qualification in Essential Skills Digital Literacy. That was the first of five lessons; yes, it was a long time to lecture, but necessary.
I admit, I enjoyed it. It felt good to be ‘teaching’ again with high-level learners who are actively engaged.

The following list of digital tools is suggested to help you with the task. However, there are LOTS of other online tools that you can use. Don't just limit yourself to this list:

All presentation tools and websites should be set to PRIVATE when doing the Live Task.

Is Technology Turning You Into a Zombie?

Maybe it was Halloween that got to me or being chased by a Creepy Killer Clown or perhaps it has been the US Presidential Election; it might even be the arrival of Season 7 of The Walking Dead - but I have certainly had Zombies on my mind (so to speak) of late.
